Where the wind blows wildfires can go
Worcester Polytechnic Institute fire protection engineers are using a newly designed wind tunnel to better understand wildfires. This research with the University of Notre Dame and the U.S. Forest Service could help predict how fast flames can spread and how far embers can reach—ultimately helping to protect lives and property.
Founded in Worcester, Mass., in 1865, WPI was one of the nation’s earliest technological universities. From our founding days, we’ve taken a unique approach to education. At WPI learning has always been about combining theory and practice. Our multi-dimensional approach to education yields more than just graduates; it helps create innovators, inventors, entrepreneurs, and most important, leaders. A WPI education has never been more relevant than it is today, because the demand for innovative thinkers who can solve problems on a global scale has never been greater.
