Seminar to Spotlight Female Firefighters’ Health Risks, Including Cancer

Firefighters put their lives on the line daily to protect communities, but their profession carries significant health risks.

While firefighting is inherently dangerous, female firefighters face unique challenges that often go unaddressed. To shed light on these critical issues, a specialised seminar will take place in March in the UK, specifically examining the health risks female firefighters encounter, including cancer.

The Particulate and Decontamination Seminar, hosted by PGI Safety in collaboration with John Lord, SimTrainer, and Jo Taylor MBE of De-Wipe and Jerry Leonard QFSM of G2-SR, will take place on 27th March 2025 at 9 AM at Biggin Hill Airport. The seminar will address critical topics, including:

  • Current understanding of contamination-related cancer risks
  • Gender-specific health risks, particularly for female responders
  • Practical solutions and next steps in contamination control
  • Mental health challenges and support systems for those affected by cancer

Key Focus: Gender-Specific Health Risks

One of the central discussions at the seminar will be led by Dany Cotton, the former Commissioner of the London Fire Brigade and a trailblazer for women in firefighting.

Cotton, who has been vocal about the need for gender-specific research and policies in the fire service, will focus on the distinct health risks that female firefighters face. This includes increased vulnerability to certain cancers due to exposure to toxic substances, as well as the need for improved protective equipment designed specifically for women.

Cotton has spent decades advocating for a more inclusive and health-conscious approach to firefighting, and her insights will be invaluable in shaping future safety measures.

Cancer Risks in Female Firefighters

Scientific research has increasingly pointed to an elevated cancer risk among firefighters due to prolonged exposure to carcinogens.

However, much of the existing data is based on male firefighters, leaving a gap in understanding how these risks specifically affect women. Studies suggest that female firefighters have higher incidences of breast, ovarian, and cervical cancers, which may be linked to prolonged exposure to toxic chemicals absorbed through the skin and inhalation of hazardous fumes.

Fire Product Search has previously written about these risks, highlighting the need for comprehensive studies on the effects of exposure in female firefighters.

The article discussed how the design of personal protective equipment (PPE) plays a crucial role in reducing health risks, noting that many PPEs are not adequately fitted for women.

Additionally, it explored the necessity of enhanced decontamination processes to remove harmful carcinogens from skin and gear.

Dr Michelle O’Toole, a researcher from RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences, will present her latest findings on the occupational health risks of firefighters. Her work focuses on understanding the physiological impact of fireground contaminants and the long-term health implications for both male and female firefighters.

O’Toole’s research will be pivotal in highlighting the need for more targeted health screenings and protective measures for female personnel.

Raising Awareness and Implementing Change

The seminar aims not only to raise awareness but also to drive tangible change in the industry.

With increasing recognition of the occupational hazards firefighters face, experts are pushing for improvements in personal protective equipment (PPE), enhanced decontamination protocols, and comprehensive health monitoring for firefighters — especially women, who have historically been overlooked in health studies and safety measures.

Another key area of focus will be advocating for policy changes at both national and international levels to ensure that female firefighters receive the same level of health monitoring and protection as their male counterparts.

This includes regular screenings for occupation-related illnesses and ensuring PPE is designed to fit women properly rather than being adapted from male-centric designs.

Event Supporters

The Particulate and Decontamination Seminar is made possible through the support of key industry leaders:

– PGI Safety Ltd – A manufacturer of high-performance protective gear, specialising in fire-resistant and flame-retardant clothing for emergency services.

– De-Wipe Ltd – Pioneering decontamination solutions designed to remove carcinogens and harmful toxins from firefighters’ skin post-exposure.

– SimTrainer – Led by John Lord, providing specialised training and consultancy services for firefighter health and safety.

– G2-SR (Go2 Safety and Rescue) – A provider of advanced air purification solutions designed to reduce exposure to airborne contaminants in fire stations and vehicles.

Why This Seminar Matters

The insights shared at this seminar will be crucial in influencing fire service policies and ensuring that firefighter health — particularly that of women — is taken seriously. The discussions will help shape future research, inform best practices, and encourage fire services worldwide to implement stronger health and safety measures.

By bringing together experts and advocates, this seminar represents a step forward in addressing the unique health challenges female firefighters face and ensuring they receive the protection they deserve.
