New Zealand Defence gets Bristol upgrade

Bristol Uniforms, a leading designer and manufacturer of protective clothing for emergency services across the globe, and its International Distributor PSL Fire & Safety (PSL) in New Zealand, are in the process of upgrading New Zealand Defence’s firefighting PPE.

New Zealand Defence is responsible for the defence, security and well-being of New Zealand citizens and comprises the Navy, Air Force and Army. For them, the health and safety of all their personnel, including firefighters, is a top priority. After extensive research and a thorough assessment of the options on the market, they opted for Bristol’s world-class, lightweight and ergonomic XFlex structural firefighting design, with a TITAN1220 outer, a Gore® Crosstech® Airlock moisture barrier and a Nomex Delta C lining.

Their new ensemble, which exceeds the AS/NZS 4967:2009 standard to which it is certified, is suitable for the various hazardous roles associated with a firefighters’ daily operations. It is specially tailored to include bellowed radio pockets suitable for a range of communication devices, velcro attachments, and mic loops. All layers are breathable, and the lining is wickable, which helps reduce the build-up of internal heat. The moisture barrier also protects firefighters from dangerous bloodborne pathogens.

A high priority for the Defence Force, was that the PPE be properly cleaned and maintained. PSL, works closely with workwear laundering specialist Apparelmaster, who will provide laundering, dry cleaning, inspection, repairs and a full collection and delivery service.

The first to order kit is The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF), who has recently taken delivery of 150 sets of new PPE. The Army will be taking delivery of 200 sets at the end of the year.

Mark Van Dorsten, International Sales Manager at PSL said: “The New Zealand Defence Force previously wore Bristol’s old Wessex kit, but times have moved on. By opting for Bristol’s new and innovative XFlex style, their kit will be lighter and they will have much more flexibility and movement. Also with studies showing that heat stress poses a huge risk to firefighters, it was important that as well as preventing water ingress, the uniform was breathable.”

Paul Gibson, International Sales Manager at Bristol said: “Once again we are delighted to be supplying our innovative PPE solutions to New Zealand Defence. Having opted for XFlex, they will see a noticeable difference in fit and performance. It is also encouraging to see they have opted for Managed Services, which not only reduces the risk of carcinogens entering the body, but also prolongs the life of the kit and ensures it remains fit for purpose throughout its life.”
