Concept Smoke Systems Supports Multi-Agency High-Rise Training Exercise at the University of Reading
Earlier this month, Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) led a large-scale high-rise training exercise at the University of Reading, bringing together multiple emergency agencies to test response to a complex urban fire scenario. The event involved crews from Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Services, alongside South Central Ambulance Service, Thames Valley Police, Casualties Union, and Berkshire Lowland Search & Rescue (BLSAR).
Purpose of the Exercise
The exercise provided emergency services with the opportunity to practice real-world coordination in a challenging high-rise environment. By working together, crews improved cross-agency communication, decision-making, and operational efficiency during high-pressure incidents.
How the Scenario Unfolded
The simulation involved a large-scale fire in a multi-storey building, with teams tasked to:
- Rescue multiple casualties from upper floors.
- Coordinate evacuation and triage operations.
- Contain and extinguish the “fire” under limited visibility conditions.
Smoke, lighting, and sound effects were used to create an authentic emergency atmosphere, testing teamwork and situational awareness.
Concept Smoke Systems’ Role
Concept Smoke Systems played a key part in enhancing training realism. The company supplied Spirit 900 and FTS Box smoke generators both designed to simulate real-life smoke conditions safely and effectively.
- The Spirit 900 delivered powerful, consistent smoke output ideal for filling large areas.
- The FTS Box provided targeted, controllable smoke for close-quarters training and rescue drills.
These tools allowed responders to navigate dense, realistic environments, improving confidence and coordination under simulated emergency conditions.
Strengthening Collaboration and Preparedness
The successful training event reinforced the value of multi-agency collaboration in preparing for complex high-rise incidents. Through practical, controlled exercises, RBFRS and its partners continue to strengthen their readiness for real-world emergencies.
Concept Smoke Systems remains committed to supporting authentic fire training environments that enhance safety and response capabilities.
