Airbus introduces Wildfire Sentinel: The “digital shield” for collaborative firefighting
At Interschutz 2026, Airbus Defence and Space has launched the Wildfire Sentinel, a holistic, data-driven firefighting ecosystem designed to transform wildfire management from reactive tactics to proactive, data-driven operations. As wildfires become a year-round global threat, this innovative solution bridges the critical gap between ground teams and aircraft, creating a resilient “digital shield” that ensures seamless data exchange and enhanced tactical awareness for safer, more efficient missions.
At the heart of the Wildfire Sentinel is a highly adaptable, “Lego-like” modular framework designed to integrate seamlessly with legacy systems. The framework blends core Airbus technology bricks – including high-capacity aerial platforms, robust tactical communication networks, and advanced flight operations – with specialised solutions from partnering companies to deliver a holistic ecosystem tailored to a region’s specific geography and assets.
The ecosystem operates through an end-to-end mission cycle built upon eight distinct operational phases:
- PREPARE: Utilises Airbus OneAtlas satellite imagery to map topography and vegetation density for data-driven mitigation planning.
- CONNECT: Establishes a deployable tactical network via Agnet by Airbus, integrating Long Term Evolution (LTE), SatCom, and Mesh technologies between field teams and command centers.
- OBSERVE: Generates a real-time Common Operational Picture (COP) using the Airbus family of unmanned aerial systems (Aliaca, Flexrotor, SiRTAP, Zephyr).
- LOCALISE: Provides universal tracking and 3D georeferencing of all ground and air assets to eliminate spatial ambiguity.
- COLLABORATE: Leverages AI-driven modeling via the Airbus Optimate system to calculate optimal water drop trajectories and provide immediate post-drop assessments.
- COMMAND: Centralises mission-critical directives while enforcing automated deconfliction and real-time hazard zone alerts.
- SUPPRESS: Deploys a versatile fleet of Airbus helicopters (H125, H145, H215, H225) and heavy-lift aircraft (A400M, C295) alongside the HYNAERO’s future Fregate F100 amphibious water bomber.
- REPLAY: Creates a digital reconstruction of the entire operation to serve as a “black box” for systematic after-action reviews and high-fidelity training.
By replacing traditional voice-radio coordination with precise visual data – such as Pléiades Neo satellite imagery and real-time infrared drone feeds – the Wildfire Sentinel eliminates the critical information lag that allows minor ignitions to escalate into uncontrollable mega-fires, serving as a vital force multiplier for emergency services.
